REANNZ features on latest Ciena Insights podcast

REANNZ CE Amber McEwen features on the latest Ciena Insights podcast alongside the Chief Executive of Canada’s NREN CANARIE, Michael Tremblay.

The discussion was led by Ciena’s Rodney Wilson and explored how national research networks power scientific discovery and global collaboration, the innovations required to support data intensive research, and the unique challenges their networks face across New Zealand and Canada.

Amber outlined the tyranny of distance’ faced by New Zealand researchers and how the network enables global collaboration

New Zealand researchers are not so much working nationally, but internationally,” she says.

“Scientific discover and innovation rarely happen in a vacuum: it's all about collaboration.

Global collaboration is very important to New Zealand as we are a small, remote country. It’s the role of REANNZ to provide local eResearch infrastructures but also to connect researchers to the global eResearch infrastructures, data sets and research programmes.

In addition, the digitisation of research many of the worlds research infrastructures operate at a scale that is not affordable to a single institution or in the case of New Zealand, even a whole country.

"So, its our role, and the role of the network, to federate access meaning researchers, regardless of their home institution, can access the capability they need."

Ciena is a global provider of high-speed connectivity. It produces regular network innovation insights via podcast, blog posts and videos.
