Our new international backup route is live!

International traffic now has another way in, improving resilience across the REANNZ network.

We’ve partnered with EonFibre to strengthen REANNZ’s international backup connectivity. It now connects into our network via Hamilton instead of Auckland, creating a physically separate path that reduces our reliance on a single location.

REANNZ CEO Amber McEwen says this will give researchers in Aotearoa a more resilient link to the rest of the world.

A researcher in Auckland working with partners in Europe or Asia, or using compute in the US, can continue their project even with disruption to one route into the network. They can keep collaborating and keep accessing the systems they rely on.”

EonFibre CEO Richard Mooney says this creates a scalable foundation for future demand as research, data and AI workloads continue to grow across New Zealand.

“REANNZ supports some of New Zealand’s most data-intensive and globally connected organisations, where resilient international connectivity is critical. By delivering a diverse route and dedicated capacity across the TGA subsea system, researchers can maintain access to global platforms, collaboration environments and advanced compute resources.”

The partnership also introduces dedicated capacity on the TGA cable system, supporting more consistent performance. In addition, it allows capacity to scale quickly as demand grows and adds protection across the route, strengthening resilience across the whole network.
