eduroam Visitor Access

About eduroam Visitor Access (eVA)

In higher education and research institutions, it is often necessary to enable temporary internet connectivity to visitors involved in educational or research activities. This includes guest speakers, conference delegates, summer school students, and visitors from other schools and colleges.

REANNZ members who are eduroam Identity Providers can now use the eduroam Visitor Access service, a cost-effective solution to ensure a seamless connectivity experience for visitors who do not have their own eduroam accounts.

How can eduroam Visitor Access (eVA) help you?

It enables you to provide temporary credentials for accessing the eduroam network already established in your institution.

You maintain overview and control

You know exactly how many and which visitors are on your network. Additionally, you can determine how long their access stays in place.

Save time and money

The management of eVA accounts occurs through a user-friendly self-service web portal. The service supports time-limited accounts that are automatically deactivated upon expiration, simplifying account management and reducing the workload of IT managers.  When compared to deploying a dedicated wireless network for each event, the eVA provides substantial cost and time savings.

A smooth experience for visitors

You can to tailor the creation of credentials for specific events. For example, conference delegates can receive their credentials in advance via text or email. Instead of making visitors repeatedly connect through a splash page, which is not required, seamless access to eduroam is provided for the period that is set by the host. All users need to do is enter their credentials provided and they are connected.

How it works

About visitor accounts

Using the eVA web portal, visitor accounts can be created in several ways.

A host organisation can enable accounts:

  1. individually using visitor's name, e-mail address or mobile number
  2. in batches by uploading a csv file containing all visitors names, e-mail addresses or mobile numbers
  3. as a group of non-defined visitors, with credentials assigned to individuals on the day of the issue
  4. as a quick 1 day account feature using just an e-mail or mobile number - to cater for unexpected guests!

A visitor can self-serve

  • With SMS-requested accounts, an event keyword is sent to by the visitor to a service SMSnumber and credentials are returned by text

Validity of accounts:

  • accounts can be set up in advance of the visit or event
  • the duration of validity can be set between 1 day and 1 year
  • password length can be adjusted to satisfy organisation policy

A visitor can receive their account information in several ways via - email, SMS, in written form or verbally.

This means that the service can support pre-booked visitors and those who turn up on the day.
