Strengthening eResearch infrastructure through the integration of NeSI into REANNZ
In 2024, the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology requested that REANNZ outline how it could integrate the services and capabilities provided by NeSI, into REANNZ.
A draft approach was approved by MBIE in November with the integration of services and transfer of funding to occur at the start of the new financial year, 1 July 2025.
1 July 2025: A new era for eResearch
Today marks the start of a new era for eResearch infrastructure, with the integration of the people, services and technologies of New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) into REANNZ.
Chief Executive Amber McEwen says that the newly expanded REANNZ is now even better able to support the research, education and innovation sectors to deliver quality outcomes and future growth.
“It is exciting to have reached this milestone after many months of working with the NeSI team to plan for how we successfully integrate.
“Combining NeSI’s deep expertise in high performance computing, capability building, and Māori data sovereignty with REANNZ’s provision of global connectivity and federated services creates new opportunities to enhance the quality and maturity of eResearch.
“The focus of our newly integrated organisation is on enabling science impact and growth: growth for researchers and educators, for the sector and for New Zealand Inc.
“Creating centralised eResearch infrastructure will decrease fragmentation and enable more equitable access to infrastructure and key specialist capabilities. Over time, it will create critical mass and enable us to offer a broader range of services to the sector.”

We see significant benefits arising from the creation of a hub for New Zealand eResearch infrastructure. An integrated business will provide critical mass, drive efficiencies and – over time – develop a stronger value proposition for the sector.
Combining the unique capabilities of both REANNZ and NeSI will create opportunities to enhance the quality and maturity of eResearch. It will drive efficiencies and enable more equitable access to eResearch infrastructure and key specialist capabilities.
Over time, it will enable us to offer a broader range of services through REANNZ’s federated services model while also maintaining the focus on the researcher.
As a result, we will be able to support a growing economy and more prosperous society, thanks to a growing, active and collaborative eResearch sector.
Over the next six months, the teams at NeSI and REANNZ will be working closely together to enable as smooth an integration as possible, while maintaining continuity of services for our users and members.
Our goal is to achieve the initial integration of NeSI services into REANNZ with as little disruption as possible, both for our people and everyone who uses our services.
From 1 July 2025, we’ll be focused on developing our strategy with the integrated team and the broader sector to ensure we are set up to deliver the benefits the sector needs, capture opportunities and maximise the impact of current investment in eResearch infrastructure.
For now, it’s business as usual for NeSI and REANNZ.
