The KAREN wiki is a collaborative space where members of the KAREN community share ideas and resources that help them to make the most of their access to KAREN.

At the end of each month we will highlight recent and interesting case studies, facts and updates from the KAREN wiki. You too can make a contribution by signing up for a wiki account.

KAREN wiki wonders | July 2009

Seismographic Information Service (SIS)

New Zealand is well known for its geological rockin' n' rollin'. Geological and Nuclear Sciences and Victoria University of Wellington are collaborating to provide researchers and educators around the world with easy access to New Zealand's seismographic data using KAREN. GNS KAREN Champion Paul Grimwood explains the project and the teaching resources now available.

High-Resolution visualisation wall at Victoria University

Victoria University of Wellington is the proud owner of New Zealand's first OptIPortal - a visualisation wall for viewing high definition static images, video, or in streaming mode. VUW's wall is made up of 12 LCD screens combined in a 4 x 3 display to give a total resolution of 10240 x 4800 pixels. You can find more details on our wiki along with photos of the OptIPortal in action.

Massey University KAREN case study explosion

Massey University's use of KAREN in the Fundamental, Mathmatical, Information and Computer Sciences is a sight to behold. From mathematical models of biological systems to computational chemistry - it's all happening. Contact details of each project leader are available if you're keen to find out more.

Practical IPv6 training

Back in March of this year, we held an IPv6 technical training workshop for Members.  David Brownlie, REANNZ Technical Operations, gave his perspectives from having implemented and worked with IPv6 on KAREN.  Glen Eustace from Massey University and Greg Phillips from Verizon provided additional presentations and learning. See the wiki entry for detailed presentations and workshop notes. Grow this resource by logging into the wiki and adding your own IPv6 experiences.

Mapping KAREN traffic flows

Donald Neal, University of Waikato's KAREN Champion posted some interesting graphs demonstrating how KAREN's importance has grown over the first couple of years to become an essential part of the organisation's connectivity. As at the middle of June 2009, around half of the Universitiy of Waikato's inbound traffic was coming via KAREN.  We expect this to increase further as the efforts of Donald's Champion activities around Waikato start to bear fruit.
