Connection layers

Our network is unlike standard commercial networks. This means there are specific rules and requirements members need to follow to connect.

One of the key differences is that members need to secure an access circuit or service between their site and the nearest network PoP.

To ensure your connection meets these rules and requirements and so that you get the best experience from the network, there are standardised ways members can connect. These options are directly related to the membership category you fall into.

Core connection

A core connection to is made directly to a core switch on the network via dark fibre or a managed service to allow members to take advantage of the full 1 Gb/s to 10 Gb/s network capacity and providing them with control over their connection. This option is only available to Members that are Universities or Crown Research Institutes.

Distribution layer connection

Under a distribution layer connection, members connect to one of 12 distribution routers at PoP sites around the country. These routers are managed by REANNZ, allowing REANNZ to control who and how people access the network. This option is available to Members that are ITPs or Wananga, Associate Members, Partners, and Content and Service Providers.
