Connecting to KAREN

There are a variety of standards that should be used when connecting to KAREN. The following standards have been set to ensure the performance and integrity of the network is maintained. These standards apply to connections to the KAREN core only.


Physical access to the POP

Connections to the KAREN POPs should consider the following:

  • Single mode fibre optic connections are the preferred “last mile” solution
  • Connections to be made at distances greater than 10km from the POP should be discussed with REANNZ before commencement. Greater distances can be architectured but costs and equipment requirements may vary
  • Each provider of physical services is required to install a dedicated OFDF in the REANNZ rack within the POP. This OFDF must support angled SC connections (also known as SC/APC or SCA or ASC)

Physical access within the POP

Connections within the KAREN POPs should adhere to the following standards:

  • All connections to KAREN should be made with single mode 9/125 micron fibre optic cable
  • The connector at the OFDF should be angled SC (also known as SC/APC or SCA or ASC)
  • The connector at the connecting organisations equipment will depend on the selection of vendor equipment

  • 1Gbps
  • 10Gbps
